Lara axed for opening South Africa Test

Goergetown:Star West Indian batsman and former captain Brian Lara has been overlooked for the opening Test match against South Africa to be played at the Bourda Oval beginning March 31.

According to West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) sources, the selectors chose to exclude Lara from the 14-man squad after he had given a non-committal response to an invitation extended to him to ink a new contract. South-paw Shivnarine Chanderpaul will captain the side in the first Test.

Six other players with personal endorsement contracts, including top batsman Ramnaresh Sarwan, opener Chris Gayle, Fidel Edwards and Dwayne Bravo, have also been omitted.

The squad: Shivnarine Chanderpaul (captain), Courtney Browne (vice captain), Wavell Hinds, Devon Smith, Donavon Pagon, Narsingh Deonarine, Daren Ganga, Ryan Hinds, Corey Collymore, Pedro Collins, Dwight Washington, Daren Powell, Jerome Taylor, Reon King.
