India eves Lanka share points in Cup opener

Durban:Rain spoilt India's chances against Sri Lanka, who were skittled out for 116 in 46.5 overs, in their first round match of the eighth Women's Cricket World Cup at the Laudium Oval, in Pretoria.

The match was abandoned after only two over of India's innings because of heavy downpour yesterday and both teams obtained three points each.

India's Neetu David claimed three for 17 in 7.5 overs and Nooshin-Al-Khadeer took two for 28 in 10 overs.

Shashikala Siriwardena (29), Chamari Polgammpola (20) and Hiruka Fernando (21) were the main contributors for Sri Lanka.

Other three matches between New Zealand and West Indies; England and Australia; and South Africa and Ireland were also abandoned due to heavy rains. All these teams will also share points.

The second round matches will takes place in the Pretoria-Johannesburg tomorrow.

Schedule: South Africa vs West Indies; India vs Ireland; New Zealand vs Australia; and England vs Sri Lanka.
