Sydney:New South Wales leggie Stuart MacGill is tipped to be picked as the back-up spinner to Shane Warne when the selectors name a 16-man squad for the Ashes series.

The leg-spinner who has had an on-and-off international career so far, often having to play in the shadows of champion Warne, stands a good chance for selection after picking an impressive haul of 54 sticks in the Pura Cup.

He was also the Man-of the Match in the Sydney Test against Pakistan last summer and his showing last summer should be enough to beat off competition from South Australia's rising star Dan Cullen who had snared 43 scalps in the Pura Cup to clinch him a berth on the plane to England. MacGill who won the Steve Waugh Medal celebrated it by scalping 6-68 to for Sydney University back into a domestic tie here.
