ITC Trophy: KIOC lifts title in Under 15 category

Bangalore:Karnataka Institute of Cricket (KIOC) defeated the visiting Sri Lankan Marian Cooray Cricket School (MCC) in the Under 15 category while the Bangalore Military School beat a strong KIOC XI in the Under 13 group in the finals of the ITC Hotels, Windsor Sheraton triangular series played at the Military school grounds.

In the Under 15 finals played between the Sri Lankan side Marian Cooray Cricket School and Karnataka Institute of Cricket, Manish Pandey of KIOC scored a superb unbeaten hundred studded with 15 fours and a six. With Nishanth Singh Shekhawat (56, 8 fours) and Abrar Kazi (44, 4 fours and 3 sixes) contributing substantially, KIOC ended up at an imposing 268 for five in 35 overs.

Chasing a huge 269 for a win, the visitors from the Emerald Island went hammer and tongs after the medium pacers but found off-spinner Nishanth Singh Shekhawat too hot to handle. Shekhawat bowled a brilliant spell of 6 overs 3 maidens 18 runs and picked up 5 wickets. He got good support from leg-spinner Shivam Bajaj who picked up 3 wickets for 26 runs.

Ashan Fernando (47 off 31 balls), Viroshan Alwis (29, 19 balls) and Dulan Gunawardana (36, 41 balls) were the batsman who scored for the visitors.

Brief Scores:

KIOC 268 for 5 in 35 overs (Manish Pandey 118 not out, Nishanth Singh Shekhawat 56, Abrar Kazi 44 not out) beat Marian Cooray Cricket School 193 all out in 29.3 overs (Ashan Fernando 47, Viroshan Alwis 29, Dulan Gunawardana 36, Nishanth Singh Shekhawat 5 for 18 and Shivam Bajaj 3 for 26) by 75 runs.

In the Under 13 finals, Bangalore Military School scored an impressive 169 for eight in the stipulated 30 overs after taking first use of the wicket. Jayprakash (33, 4 fours) and Nitish gave the military School a solid start putting on 72 runs for the first wicket off just 11 overs before Nitish was dismissed by left-arm spinner Vignesh for 28. Vikas Kalkal continued the good work scoring 33 off just 29 balls. Left-arm spin twins Vignesh and Bharadwaj were the most successful bowlers for KIOC picking up two wickets apiece.

In reply, KIOC started poorly losing their captain Dinesh with just four runs on the board but recovered through a good partnership between Maanik Nath and one drop Vinoop Manoharan who put on 68 runs before Maanik was clean up by Shamsher Singh for 46. Maanik struck eight fours while facing 33 balls and Vinoop had hits to the fence in his knock of 42 off 46 balls. Poojith slowed down the proceedings and KIOC fell short by 15 runs. The Military schoolboys fielded brilliantly and backed their bowlers very well. This eventually turned the match in their favour.

Bangalore Military School 169 for 8 in 30 overs (Jayprakash 33, Nitish 28, Vikas Kalkal 33, Vignesh V 2 for 21, Bharadwaj Sheshadri 2 for 25) beat KIOC 154 for 8 in 30 overs (Maanik Nath 46, Vinoop 42, Poojith Jain 24) by 15 runs.

Manish Pandey in the Under 15 category and Maanik Nath in the Under 13 category were declared best batsman while Nishanth Singh Shekhawat of KIOC in the Under 15 and Nagendar of Military School in Under 13 were adjudged the best bowlers.

Mr Anand Rao, general manager, Windsor Manor Sheraton gave away the trophies.
