London:Former England captain Karen Smithies feels South African women's cricket would take big strides after successful staging of the Women;s World Cup.

Smithies was quoted as saying in BBC Sport that women's cricket in South Africa could take off in the coming years despite the hosts being shown the exit door early in the league stage.

"South Africa being a sporting nation, we needed the World Cup to be here. It's given the public something to think about and hopefully women's cricket will begin now to take hold and grow in South Africa," BBC Sport quoted.

A member of the World Cup winning England squad of 1993. Smithies believes there is a storehouse of talent in the country.

"There is a lot of talent here - raw talent, so to speak.I think if we can begin to produce and grow that and carry it through, then I think the South Africans, if they are playing more cricket, will prove more difficult for the opposition in 2009," BBC Sport quoted.
