Melbourne:Victorian quickie Mick Lewis has come a long way after being thrown in at the deep end of big-time cricket from his early playing days in Montmorency and Rosanna area.

The 30-year-old bowler, who is one of two new players included on the list of 25 players contracted to Cricket Australia for the next 12 months, piloted Victoria to Pura Cup victory in 2003-04 and had been a consistent performer for Victoria last season, scalping 38 wickets at an average off 22 but even that was not enough to impress the selectors as he narrowly missed the Ashes bus to fellow speedster Shaun Tait.

Lewis, who is currently playing for Durham at county level, as cover for injured Queensland tearway Ashley Noffke, is signed to play league cricket in Liverpoll once Noffke returns.

The Cricket Australia contract will ensure him earnings to the tune of at least $120,000 - but more than the moolah factor, Lewis would seriously nurse his chances of making into the world' best side on the planet.

It' may be noted that south-paw Daren Lehmann, Jimmy Maher, Brad Williams and Martin Love - were eased out from the contract list.
