Shimla:Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association today justified their decision to hold election today as per their own constitution despite the state government's recent Himachal Pradesh Sports Act to regulate the functioning of sports bodies.

"The elections would be held as scheduled on Sunday without taking cognizance of the sports act as HPCA was an affiliate unit of BCCI and not the Indian Olympic Association," HPCA spokesman Sanjay Sharma said here today.

If BCCI was brought under the domain of IOA, the HPCA would automatically follow the charter of the State Olympic Association, he added.

The state government recently passed the Himachal Pradesh Sports Act which makes it mandatory for all the state and district level sports organisations, except the primary sports committees, to get registered with the registrar and hold the elections at least once in four years.

The Act also debars the life members from voting for state body and makes it mandatory for all the sports organisations to hold the elections under the supervision of an observer appointed by the State Sports Council.

It also makes the non Himachalis non-eligible to become members of sports bodies in the state and does not give right to vote to the outgoing office bearers of the Association.

The electoral college for HPCA elections comprise 86 voters including presidents and secretaries of all the district associations besides 25 life members.
