Colombo:Sri Lanka's national cricket team was literally "no-balled" on Tuesday when officials refused to release practice white balls ahead of an unofficial tri-nations tournament in Abu Dhabi, sources said.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) refused to release the balls, the same as will be used in the tournament from Friday, after its recognition as a national sports body was suspended by the government, the sources said.

An interim committee appointed to govern the sport made the decision for the team, led by captain Marvan Atapattu, to play the Abu Dhabi tournament also involving India and Pakistan, they added.

Neither the government nor SLC commented on the situation.

Sports Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga sacked Lankan cricket's governing body amid allegations of financial irregularities and appointed the interim committee to oversee the game.

No formal charges have been brought against SLC management.
