New Delhi:The Lok Sabha was informed today (May 3, 2005) that the use of insignia of the national flag on the helmets worn by Indian cricket players is prohibited under the law.

Replying to a written question, minister of state for Home Affairs Manikrao Hodlya Gavit said on behalf of the government that the use of the national flag as a portion of costume or uniform of any description, or embroidery or printing it on any dress material, is prohibited under the prevention of insults to national flag honour act, 1971.

He said that a reference was also received from the ministry of youth affairs and sports recently, and accordingly the ministry was informed that the use of the insignia of the national flag on helmets of cricket players was not permissible.

The controversy arose when some cricket players were using the national flag on their helmets.
