Karachi:Injury-plagued Pakistan off-spinner Saqlain Mushtaq's return to international action could be further delayed following complications arising from the surgery he had undergone on both his knees last year to remove excess fluid and repair fractures.

The 28-year-old bowler, who is rated as Pakistan's best spinner with 208 wickets in 49 Tests and 288 in 169 One-day Internationals, was eyeing an April-May return to competitive cricket, but all those plans had to be put on hold as he has been forced to further undergo a special course of injections aimed at reducing pain in his knees which he experienced after resuming training in February.

It is learnt that doctors have advised him to go through a special course of injections in a bid to remove the source of the pain.

It may be noted that Saqlain last appeared in a Test in Multan against India in March 2004. He was axed after that series and subsequently played for English County Surrey where he developed his knee problems following which he had to pull out of the county season that year.
