Patel says this would help the Australian in discharging his function.
"I think it will help him if he is made a part of the selection committee and given voting right," Patel said.
Patel, a former chairman of the selection committee, said that national selectors had always given opportunities to Chappell's predecessor John Wright to express his views while choosing Indian teams for tournaments.
"Now if Chappell is given a voting right, I think that process will be taken forward," he said.
It is worth recalling that soon after being named India's coach, Chappell expressed his keenness to be part of the selection committee with voting rights.
