New Delhi:After his comments on Sachin Tendulkar's retirement ignited a nationwide debate, legendary cricket all-rounder Kapil Dev said his words on the 'little master' were misquoted by some media persons.

"I wish to clarify that my comments on Sachin Tendulkar have been reported incorrectly by some media people. I never said Tendulkar should retire," Kapil said in a statement.

"His contribution to Indian cricket is unmatched and his dedication to the game is worth emulation by the youth. Given his stature I had suggested that the retirement decision should be left to him only, because he knows best when to stop playing," Kapil, who was chosen as the Wisden Indian Cricketer of the Century, said.

The former captain explained that he had only said that Tendulkar should go out with grace and dignity that marks his game.

"I had only meant to suggest that Tendulkar should be given a graceful farewell whenever it happens. He should retire with grace and dignity that marks his cricket. Needless to say we all know that Tendulkar still has lots to offer. I wish him well."
