Warrant against Kapil Dev stays till Sept 1

Mumbai:The Bombay High Court has stayed till September 1 the bailable arrest warrant issued by a local court against former Indian cricket Captain Kapil Dev in a cheque-bouncing case.

Justice V K Tahilramani granted stay on the bailable warrant against Kapil and his appearance before the court till September 1 in a case filed by internet portal cricketnext.com.

Kapil's advocate, Satish Maneshinde said celebrities like lyricist Javed Akhtar formed a non-governmental organisation called 'Khushi' to collect aid for tsunami victims, The former cricketer was made the president of the NGO.

The NGO had asked Cricketnext.com to organise an event in January for children affected by tsunami, he said, adding that the portal was given a cheque of Rs five lakh by Khushi in advance for the purpose.

Maneshinde further said the bank was asked to withhold the cheque payment as the event never materialised and the portal was asked to return the cheque. But, the portal had deposited the cheque and it bounced.
