Ganguly~~s grandfather S Chatterjee passes away

Kolkata:Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly's maternal grandfather Sachchidananda Chatterjee, under whose tutelage the cricketer took his first nervous steps into the game, died at his south Kolkata residence here today after a protracted illness.

Ganguly's family sources said, Chatterjee (86) was not keeping well after suffering a celebral attack about two months ago.

A widower, Chatterjee left behind a son and a daughter. A former footballer, Chatterjee turned out for Sporting Union in the 1940s.

"He was a friend, philosopher and guide to Sourav. He taught Sourav the basics of the game. Even today, Sourav used to turn to him when he needed advice," Chatterjee's son Arup said.

Chatterjee was a former vice-president of the Cricket Association of Bengal, and held the same post for several years in the Indian Football Association.

A popular figure on the maidan, the city's sports hub, Chatterjee also served as the manager of Bengal Ranji trophy team.
