Laxman to lead India ~~A~~ Challenger series

New Delhi:India's leading wicket-taker Anil Kumble and left arm pacer Ashish Nehra were rested while Sachin Tendulkar was all set to play his first competitive match in nearly six months after the teams for the Challenger Series for the NKP Salve Trophy was announced here today.

Tendulkar has been out of action since the home series against Pakistan in April early this year as a surgery he underwent on his left elbow prevented him from playing in atri-series in Sri Lanka and also kept him out of the tour of Zimbabwe at the start of the season.

The star batsman was also forced to opt out of the World XI team to take on Australia in ICC Super Series - consisting of three ODIs and a six-day Test -- in Australia from October 5.

The last match Tendulkar played was the sixth ODI against Pakistan at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground here on April 17.

The Challenger Series, featuring the cream of Indian Cricket in three teams of India Seniors, India 'A' and India 'B' in limited overs round-robin format, would be played atMohali from October 10 to 13.

Announcing the teams for the Challenger Series, BCCI Secretary S K Nair here said that Kumble was advised four weeks' rest following a fitness report by Indian team physioJohn Gloster.

Nair could not specify Kumble's problem but said the Karnataka bowler was under rehabilitation.

Nehra, who missed the Test series in Zimbabwe, would be unavailable for six weeks, Nair said.

The Board Secretary also said the two players and any bowler with a fitness problem would have to prove his recovery by playing in a domestic match to be eligible for playing in an international match.

Nair said the new 'Super Sub Rule' being trialled by the International Cricket Council in ODIs would be applied in the Challenger Series.

India Seniors: Sourav Ganguly (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Mohammad Kaif, Y Venugopala Rao, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Murali kartik, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, Zaheer Khan, J P Yadav and Vidyut Sivaramakrishnan.

India 'A': V V S Laxman (captain), Gautam Gambhir, Suresh Raina, Hemang Badani, Niraj Patel, Dheeraj Jadhav, Dinesh Kaarthick, Ramesh Powar, Rudra Pratap Singh, Laxmipathy Balaji, V R V Singh, M Nadeem and Manoj tiwari.

India 'B': Dinesh Mongia (captain), Shikhar Dhawan, Robin Uthappa, Sridharan Sriram, Sunny Singh, Satyajit Parab, Parthiv Patel, Sreesanth S, Ranadeb Bose, Amit Bhandari, Ravi Kant Shukla, Piyush Chawla and Sreekumar Nair.
