"I am happy and delighted. I only wanted that he should not be shifted in a short span", Kapil Dev, here in connection with the World Cup of Golfing Cricketers, told reporters here last night.
Kapil, who led India's World Cup winning squad, expressed immense confidence in Dravid, saying "he can deliver the goods".
However, he had a word of caution for the new captain, remarking, "Dravid should give mind to every aspect of the game. He should not be doing anything to please somebody.Personal liking and disliking should not come into the game".
In the last five to six years, Dravid has been maintaining consistency in his performance, he said but declined to answer a query on India's prospects in the 2007 World Cup, saying "it is still far away".
Kapil suggested to BCCI to groom a 30-member team ahead of the World Cup and added "those who are fit will play and others who lack fitness will have to go".
He declined to react whether the row between India's coach Greg Chappell and Sourav Ganguly cost the Bengal Tiger his captaincy and termed the episode as "unfortunate".
"Our boys should cultivate the habit of winning right now", he advised.
Former Pakistan Skipper Zaheer Abbas, welcoming the BCCI decision to name Dravid as captain for the two important series, remarked "I am sure Dravid being the captain, the team will do well".
"Dravid is a key batsman. He has no technical faults. He is a good leader and has a good future", Abbas, a prolific run getter of yesteryears said.
Expressing agreement with Kapil that Dravid should be continued as captain for a longer period, Abbas said, "You have to give him few years to prove. IT is a good move by BCCI that Dravid will lead India in 12 matches".
On Ganguly being stripped of the captaincy, Abbas said "Ganguly is out of form. He is not performing".
Asked about the prospects of Ganguly regaining his captaincy and returning to the team, Abbas said "it is difficult for Ganguly to come back. Once you are out, it is very difficult. There are few chances after being a captain and to come back is not easy".
Abbas virtually threw his lot behind Chappell, asserting that "a coach has got right to demand something from players".
Ajay Jadeja who also welcomed Dravid's appointment as skipper, remarked "we need a change. I hope it is for the good".
In a guarded reaction, Jadeja said a captain should not be termed bad when looses a series or hailed when he wins. When Ganguly became captain for the first time, there were experts, who decried the decision saying "Ganguly is not worth. But Ganguly led the team successfully over these years".
Commenting on the performance of the Karnataka stylish batsman, Jadeja said, "Dravid has got a great character for building the side".
Jadeja also favoured that a captain should enjoy good spell of captaincy and should not change after two series.
