Mumbai:The Indian Cricket Board today clarified that Union Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had resigned from its marketing committee only because of his official position (in the government) and for no other reason.

"I want to clarify one thing. Mr Sharad Pawar (also President of the Mumbai Cricket Association) has resigned because of his official position and not for other reasons attributed in the news reports which are defaming the board,"

BCCI president Ranbir Singh Mahendra said here today. Mahendra, who spoke to the reporters after the BCCI's Marketing comittee meeting here, also distributed photocopies of the resignation letter sent by Pawar to the Board, explaining the reasons for relinquishing his membership of the sub-committee, to the media persons.

In the letter addressed to Mahendra, Pawar has said, "I am grateful to BCCI for nominating me on the Committee of Marketing. However, because of my official position I may not be able to work in the said committee. I, therefore, tender my resignation from the committee.

However, I shall be happy to give all possible co-operation to the committee."

The letter by Pawar, who is also the chairman of the government's Disaster Management Cell, was dated October 13, three days prior to the marketing committee meeting held today.
