Brisbane:A century from Queensland skipper Jimmy Maher put his side in a dominant position against Tasmania in the opening Sheffield Shield match of the Australian cricket season.

Maher was not out for 108 at stumps on the second day of the match as Queensland grafted to five wickets for 273 runs on a difficult batting track in reply to Tasmania's first innings total of 268.

Queensland were struggling after losing two wickets for 19 runs but a stand between Maher and Australian one-day all rounder James Hopes, who scored 77 off 88 balls, steadied the innings.

Western Australia was bundled out for 142 in the opening day of their match against Victoria.
