Kolkata:Following an appeal made by Sourav Ganguly to his fans, the Maidan Sports Welfare Association today withdrew its call for a state-wide bandh on December 20 to protest his ouster from the Test squad.

The non-political organisation, which gave the bandh call on December 15, decided to reverse its decision in view of appeals made by Ganguly as also former BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya to show restraint.

"As per the requests of Sourav and Jagmohan Dalmiya, we have decided to withdraw the bandh call," a spokesman of the Association told PTI here.

The Association, he said, would decide on its next course of action at a meeting on December 22.

After announcing a sports bandh on December 20, the Association had upgraded their call to a statewide bandh, saying it was encouraged by the "overwhelming" public response to its agitation.

Association sources had said more than one lakh people had responded to its signature campaign and claimed that the Artists Forum, an umbrella body of film and televisionartists' of the state, had supported its call.

However, the bandh call was withdrawn after Ganguly made an appeal to his fans yesterday not to disrupt normal life and expressed confidence of making a comeback to international cricket.
