Bangalore:Poor performance by its batsmen continued to haunt Karnataka which posted a moderate 255 runs for the loss of seven wickets on the opening day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Elite 'A' group cricket match against Maharashtra at the M Chinnaswamy stadium today.

Karnataka electing to bat after winning the toss could reach 255 following an 118 run partnership for the second wicket between Robin Uthappa (96), who missed his century by four runs and Barrington Rowland (46).

Karnataka, which is under pressure to notch up an outright victory against Maharastra to be in the reckoning seemed to be in trouble at this stage.

Karnataka has three points from four matches and Maharashtra four from as many outings.

After the exit of opener Bharat Chipli (27) who was bowled by Munaf Patel when the side's score was 45, Barrington joined Uthappa and managed to push the score to 163.

The fall of Barrington, who chipped in valuable 46 runs with the aid of four boundaries, signalled the collapse of Karnataka batting line up as it lost wickets at frequent intervals.

Skipper Sujit Somasundar, who stumps were uprooted by Suyash Burkal scored 31 runs reaching fence twice.

C Raghu on 11 and R Vinay Kumar on one were at the crease when stumps were drawn for the day.

Brief scores: Karnataka (first innings) 255 for seven wickets. Robin Uthappa 96, Barrington Rowland 46, Sujit Somasundar 31; Munaf Patel 2/37, Sairaj Bhahutale 2/80.
