London:Monty Panesar could be set for a shock call-up to the England cricket squad for the tour of India after being given a vote of confidence by the chairman of selectors David Graveney.

The 23-year-old Northamptonshire spinner could replace veteran Shaun Udal - who had a less than impressive tour of Pakistan taking just three wickets at a cost of 92.33 - as he impressed last season taking 46 championship wickets at 21.54.

"A lot of people have made comments about spinners playing in our cricket," Graveney told the BBC.

"So I'd like to put forward Monty Panesar, a left-arm spinner, as someone who could break through this year."

Panesar has spent the off season at the Darren Lehmann Academy in Adelaide where he has been working on improving his batting.
