New Zealand set West Indies 291 for victory

Sydney:West Indies were 48 without loss at stumps on the third day of the opening test with New Zealand at Auckland today, leaving them a further 243 runs for victory.

Chris Gayle was unbeaten on 28 with fellow opener Daren Ganga not out on 20, giving the tourists a great start in the pursuit of the 291 they need to win.

New Zealand were bowled out for 272 midway through the final session after starting the day on 98-4 and an overall lead of 116 at Eden Park.

Wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum top-scored with 74 off 126 balls while Stephen Fleming and Daniel Vettori both made 33. Gayle polished off the tail to capture four wickets.
