London:The success of next year's World Cup in West Indies will, to a large extent, depend on the performance of the local team, believes tournament chief executive Chris Dehring.

''To have a successful tournament we have to have an enthusiastic local population so we have to have a successful West Indies team,'' Dehring told the BBC Sport.

''We're going to carry our boys on our backs and help them be successful,'' he added.

West Indies have a tough opposition in Pakistan to face in their opening match in Jamaica. But the World Cup organiser is not worried.

''To be frank we believe we have a competitive team,'' he said.

''We're ICC Champions Trophy One-day kings after winning in 2004 - England don't like to be reminded about losing that final - and we're at home.'' The tournament spread across nine countries in the Carribean will be a major test of the organisers who are still struggling to find sponsors for the event.

But Mr Dehring said the situation has improved considerably and things were now moving smoothly.
