LONDON (AFP):A day after Cardiff's Sophia Gardens venue was awarded a 2009 Ashes Test, it was the setting of England bowler Simon Jones's comeback for Glamorgan.

Jones showed no signs of ill effects from the ankle and knee problems that saw him miss England's recent tours to Pakistan and India as he took the field against a Cardiff students team.

The match was disrupted by the weather but Jones emerged unscathed and happy with figures of 1-23 after bowling nine overs in two spells from the Cathedral End.

The 27-year-old now hopes to play a major part in Glamorgan's opening CetG Trophy clash against Essex at Chelmsford on Saturday.

"It felt good. The ball was coming out well and I was generating some pace on a slow pitch," said Jones.

"It's given me some confidence for the Essex game at Chelmsford where I'm hoping to take the new ball."

Jones's aim is to be fully fit by the start of the next Test series against Sri Lanka on May 11.
