London:Rookie batsman Jonathan Hughes was celebrating after smashing a record jointly held by cricket legends Sir Garfield Sobers of the West Indies and India's Ravi Shastri, according to the Sun on Wednesday.

Hughes smacked 42 off one over for North Leeds in a regional cup match between amateur sides on the way to an unbeaten 126, even though it was only the second time he had batted for his club.

The 29-year-old managed to hit six sixes, a four and a two off a single over after the bowler, Craig Hobson bowled two no-balls.

Speaking about his over on Tuesday, Hughes joked: "It seemed to take forever because of the time spent looking for the ball."

The previous record of 36 from six sixes was achieved by Sobers playing for Nottingham in 1968 and Shastri, playing for Bombay in 1985.
