Dubai:The ninth edition of the Asia Cup, which was scheduled to be held in Pakistan next year, has been postponed till 2008, Asian Cricket Council (ACC) Chief Executive Ashraf-ul Haq said.

''The Asia Cup cricket tournament will be held in 2008. It was supposed to be held in Pakistan next year but now it has been decided to stage it in 2008,'' the ACC chief told Gulf News. The tournament, which is a part of the ICC Future Torus Programme (FTP), is now likely to be held in April 2008 instead of October as Pakistan would be hosting the Champions Trophy in September.

The Asia Cup will feature UAE and Oman along with defending champions Sri Lanka. India, Pakistan and Bangladesh will also feature in the tournament.

The tournament, which started in 1984, was last held in 2004 after a gap of four years in Sri Lanka and the hosts won the trophy beating India in the finals.

Meanwhile, the ACC chief also congratulated the Asian bloc for winning the 2011 World Cup bid and said the event would help promote the game in the region.

''Asia deserved to host the World Cup. It will promote the game in not only Test playing countries like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh but also in all other countries in the region,'' he said.
