Ntini wins SA Cricketer of the Year award

Johannesberg:Pacer Makhaya Ntini beat the competition from his captain Graeme Smith and veteran all-rounder Shaun Pollock to win his second successive South African Cricketer of the Year award here last night.

Ntini, who also won the Proteas Test Cricketer of the Year accolade, was given the award in a glittering ceremony as he capped a second successful season with a haul of 48 wickets.

Pollock was presented the South African One-day Cricketer of the year award and also emerged as his teammates choice for the Player of the Year award.

Young star AB de Villiers, who has been playing multiple roles of a reserve wicketkeeper and opening batsman, was the fans' favourite and he gobbled the most number of votes to win the popular award.

The best Newcomer award went to talented allrounder Johan Van der Wath.

In total, 30 awards were presented at a ceremony attended by leading sporting and business dignitaries. Apart from the national players, domestic cricketers and local officials were also honoured at the ceremony.
