Second Test pitch proved deceptive, says Lara

St Lucia:Appearences are deceptive. Ask Brian Lara and he will promptly vouch for the adage as the West Indian captain admitted the ''greentop'' here turned out to be a faade and playing a spinner wasn't a bad idea in hindsight.

''Thinking that we played four fast bowlers we might have fielded first on winning toss. But, as I told before I hoped that the pitch doesn't turn out to be a faade. It looked green but didn't help the bowlers at all,'' said the West Indies skipper.

Lara also said that having picked five seamers, he thought a spinner could have come handy. ''At this stage in hindsight you would want a spinner to see what he could do. But even I was also sure that the pitch won't have offered the zip to spinners. It is slow for both fast and slow bowlers. We have selected a team and it has to do the job,'' said Lara.

Lara also congratulated Sehwag on his century and said that Indian opener had read the conditions well.

''Sehwag was batting as if it was a one day game. He assessed the situation very quickly and played accordingly. There was a bit of high risk but he got away with it. He knew the ball was not seaming so he played his shots well,'' said Lara.

However, Lara said that his team did a good job in the last two sessions.

''As a captain you want to attack and have slips in first session of a Test match. But at 140 for no loss at lunch and then holding them back to 100 runs each session afterwards was I suppose good comeback from our boys,'' said Lara.

Lara handed out special praise to Pedro Collins who completed his century of Test wickets.

''Excellent effort by Pedro not just today but he has done yeoman service to us over the years. He has got to his first milestone and I am very proud of him. He is the only wicket taker today because he bowled at the right area, slanted the ball to the right handers and brought in to left handers and he was rewarded,'' said Lara.

Collins also said that he was delighted by his career haul of 100 wickets so far.

''It wasn't easy especially today as the wicket was very slow and wasn't doing much. But after lunch I bowled right length and got some success. It was a great feeling to bowl Yuvraj and get 100 wickets to be honest. It took me a while, as I had couple of injuries. I am happy that the selectors chose me for this match,'' said Collins.
