Botham awarded doctorate for charity walks

London:Legendary cricketer Ian Botham has been decorated with an honorary doctorate of letters from the University of Chester.

The ex-England all-rounder, who was born in Heswall, Merseyside, was awarded the doctorate for his charity work.

He has raised more than 8.5mil pound sterlings for children with leukaemia, much of it through his marathon walks.

University Vice-Chancellor, Professor Tim Wheeler, said: "He is a fantastic example of what can be achieved through determination and perseverance."

The ceremony was held at Chester Cathedral.
