The stylish right-hander Thursday drove a four to mid-on in his second innings in the third Test against the West Indies, taking him to 48 not out and past Richards' landmark of 1,710 runs in 11 Tests, achieved in 1976.
The elated Yousuf raised his bat and looked to the skies with relief, before hitting the next ball for another boundary. West Indies captain Brian Lara applauded him and went to congratulate him at the end of the over.
Yousuf achieved the record in the same number of Tests. In his first innings here he also broke a record jointly held by Richards and Sri Lanka's Aravinda de Silva by scoring eight centuries in 2006.
