Johannesburg:The start of play on the first day of the first Test between South Africa and India at the Wanderers Stadium was delayed because of damp patches on the pitch.

Play was expected to begin an hour after the scheduled start subject to an inspection by umpires Mark Benson and Daryl Harper.

Damp hessian had been placed on the pitch overnight to prevent it getting too dry in hot conditions but there was then excessive sweating under the covers which was not burned off by the sun in time for the toss.
