The 18-year-old, who plays for Delhi Ranji Trophy side, is yet to make his Test debut but performed well for India U-19 in England and Pak this season. Pathan will return home following a dismal show in the one-day series which Proteas won 4-0.
"Ishant Sharma is joining the Indian team," confirmed BCCI official Ratnakar Shetty.
Sharma could be considered for the third and final Test in Cape Town next week.

Talking to mediapersons after the end of the third day's play in the Ranji match being played here against Saurashtra, he said, ''I am very happy to join the squad before the final Test at Cape Town''.
The 18-year-old Delhi medium pacer, who has scalped 22 wickets this season in five matches, said he would do his best for the Indian Team. The 12th Standard Arts student of Ganga Ram Internation School, Delhi, Ishant is likely to leave in a day or two to join the squad.
Standing at six feet and four inches, Ishant's well disguised bouncer has impressed experts on the domestic circuit.
