MELBOURNE (AFP):Australia defeated England to win the fourth Ashes Test by an innings and 99 runs and take a 4-0 lead in the series at the Melbourne Cricket Ground here.

The Australians routed the tourists for 161 in their second innings on Thursday to wrap up the comprehensive victory inside three days.

England were dismissed for 159 off 74.2 overs in their first innings after winning the toss.

Australia have outplayed England to win by 277 runs in Brisbane, six wickets in Adelaide, 206 runs in Perth and by an innings here.

It was Australia's 15th win (one drawn) in their last 16 Tests since losing the Ashes in England in September 2005.

Express bowler Brett Lee led the way taking 4-47 and Stuart Clark took three wickets.

Australia will be aiming for a 5-0 series -- the first since 1921 -- when they go into the Sydney Test, starting on Tuesday.
