Hyderabad, after being put into bat, were off to a good start with a 91 run opening partnership between Tirumala Setty Suman and D B Ravi Teja. Once Dinda broke this partnership, Hyderabad were never comfortable and were at 258 for six at draw of stumps on day one.
The day's honours went to the 22-year-old medium pacer whose best bowling performance of six for 52 had helped Bengal defeat Punjab earlier this season. He was once again on song today with the pitch offering assistance to medium pacers.
Earlier, Hyderabad openers Suman and Ravi Teja succeeded in resisting the opponents. At one stage Hyderabad were cruising comfortably with Suman making 44 off 74 balls that included seven hits to the fence. His partner was more aggressive, registering his fourth half century in his debut season. The first change bowler Ashok Dinda brought about the change for Hyderabad.
Ravi, in his stay of 92 minutes, hit nine boundaries off 64 balls making 57 before he was caught at third man by S S Lahiri off Ashok Dinda. Twelve runs later, Suman pulled the off-spinner to midwicket only to be caught by L R Shukla. No 3 batsman Shashank Nag was never comfortable and was caught plumb in front by Ashok Dinda for just one run. Suddenly, in the space of 14 runs Hyderabad lost three wickets.
The arrival of dependable middle order batsman Arjun Yadav, a South Zone player, who cracked a century against Sri Lanka-A at Eden Gardens, again rose to expectations. He exhibited all his batting skills to the home crowd with his on and off side shots that fetched him 79 runs off 162 balls. Arjun Yadav hit nine boundaries and two sixers off Lahiri, that came through a pull over midwicket and a lofted shot over long off.
After skipper Anirudh Singh fell to Dinda for 18, Vinay Kumar ran himself out attempting a single which was not there. Wicketkeeper batsman Ibrahim Khaleel was caught in front by Dinda and Hyderabad were again in trouble.
Arjun Yadav remained not out on 79 and giving him company was M P Arjun on 12. Hyderabad ended at 258 for six wickets in 90 overs.
