Bangalore:Team India discard Robin Uthappa's masterly 159 powered Karnataka to an impressive 309 for 6 against Tamil Nadu in the Ranji Trophy Elite Group 'A' tie at M Chinnaswamy Stadium here today.

Losing two quick wickets with score reading 45, the home team recovered remarkably thanks to a fine century by Uthappa and his 100-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Yere Goud stabilised the Karnataka Innings.

Tamil Nadu in the final session of day's play hit back by removing Tilak Naidu and young southpaw Deepak Chougle cheaply to give some anxious moments for the hosts before Raichur lad Yere Goud with the seasoned campaigner Joshi cautiously played out TN bowlers for the day.

Uthappa, who is enjoying a good run in the tournament so far, played yet another classic innings. He belted the TN bowlers around the park at his whims and fancy. His innings was studded with 21 hits to fence and five over it.

Uthappa was also involved in a stimulating 96 run partnership for the third wicket with C Raghu (39).

Former Railways player and Karnataka skipper Yere Goud, playing his 88th Ranji tie, crossed 5000 runs mark, a major milestone indeed for 'Mr Cricket' of India. Yere Goud (58 off 161 balls) played a typical patient innings to anchor Karnataka to safety.

Uthappa was also involved in a stimulating 96 run partnership for the third wicket with C Raghu (39).

Tamil Nadu, who is without the service of their ace paceman Jesuraj, secured early break through, however, could not sustain their bowling against the dominating hosts.
