Hamilton:The final and deciding one-day international cricket match between New Zealand and Sri Lanka was abandoned without a ball being bowled due to rain.

The two sides were tied 2-2 after the first four games of the five match series.

Meanwhile, Sanath Jayasuriya became the most capped player in the history of limited-overs cricket on Tuesday although the fifth match between was abandoned because of rain.

The 37-year-old Sri Lankan opener was credited with his 375th One-day appearance despite the abandonment, moving clear of India's Sachin Tendulkar with whom he was previously tied.

The abandonment of the match left the series tied 2-2 and increased a deadlock between the teams in three series this season.

Their two-Test series was tied 1-1 and a two-match Twenty20 series was also shared.
