Melbourne:England batsman Kevin Pietersen was taken to hospital for a scan on his ribs after he received an agonising blow from a Glenn McGrath delivery in the first One-day tri-series match against Australia today.

Pietersen, who had belted Cameron White for three sixes in an imperious stay at the crease, was rocked back as he misjudged a ball from McGrath when he was on 73.

Charging down the wicket to McGrath, a tactic he used to good effect in the recent Ashes series, Pietersen collapsed to the floor in agony after the blow to his right side and needed several minutes to compose himself.

He received treatment from the England physio, but he was in clear pain for the remainder of his innings before finally holing out to long-on for a defiant 82 in England's total of 242 for eight.

England confirmed Pietersen, a rare good performer in his side's 5-0 Ashes defeat, would not take the field for the start of the Australian innings as he was taken for the precautionary scan.
