Ahmedabad:Riding on masterful 89 runs by opener Wasim Zaffar, West Zone defeated Central Zone by three wickets in the opening tie of the Deodhar Trophy day-night one-day cricket match played at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium here on Sunday night.

The victory earned valuable four points for the West Zone.

Another positive for the victorious side was that Team India's speedster Irfan Pathan has been cleared for forthcoming World Cup at West Indies by the selectors -- Dilip Vengsarkar, Ranjib Biswal and Bhupinder Singh (Senior), who had mainly arrived to check the physical fitness of the seamer.

Chasing a modest victory target of 235 runs in 50 overs, Wasim and Yusuf khan Pathan began the chase in style with their partnership of 47 runs coming, in just 6.5 over before the latter was dismissed by R P Singh when his individual score was 20 runs, made in just 18 balls.

After Yusuf's departure, Wasim and No 3 batsman Rushikesh Kanitkar made 105 runs between them in just 124 balls. Their centurion partnership secured the victory for the West Zone, but, with the team's total on 152 runs, Kanitkar returned to pavillion with personal contribution of 43 runs in 67 balls.

Next batsman Rohit Sharma also made an early exit contributing just one run when he was brilliantly run out by Mohmmad Kaif with a direct throw.

However, thereafter Wasim was given good support by captain Amol Majumdar, who remained unbeaten on 33 runs, to further consolidate their position for victory. With the team's score on 193. Wasim was deceived by a slower delivery of S Srivastava to baloon the ball at short-long-on which was well-judge by Piyush Chavla.

After Wasiom departed, the West Zone victory path seconed shaky as it lost another three wickets - Irfan, Parthiv Patel and Sairaj Bahutule with their individual scores of 2, 8 and zero runs respectively.

However, captain Amol kept one-end intact and then incoming batsman No 9 Abhishek Nayar, who made 10 runs, sailed the West Zone to clinch the victory in 43 overs.

For Central Zone, the most successful bowler was S Srivastava who took three wickets for 53 runs, while Murali Karthik took two wickets for 45 runs.

Brief Scores Central Zone 234 all out in 49.4 overs (Pravin Kumar 51, Faiz 38, S Abbas 51, R P Singh 35; Irfan Pathan 2 for 48, Ramesh Powar 4 for 25) lost to West Zone 237 for 7 in 43 overs (Wasim Zaffar 89, H Kanitkar 43, Amol Muzumdar 33 not out; R P Singh 1 for 53, J P Yadav 1 for 23, S Srivastava 3 for 53, Murali Karthik 2 for 45).
