England suffer Pietersen scare ahead of Oval Test

London: England batsman Kevin Pietersen missed practice at The Oval here Tuesday, just two days before the third and final Test against India starts at the London ground, with a high temperature.

South Africa born Pietersen, 27, remained in England's team hotel when the players for a net session.

An England spokesman said the Hampshire player had been placed on a course of antibiotics and would be reassessed on Wednesday morning when a decision on whether to call up a standby batsman would also be taken.

Middlesex's Owais Shah would appear to be the next batsman in line if Pietersen declared unfit

Pietersen has not missed a Test match since making his debut against Australia at Lord's two years ago and averages 52 in 29 appearances.

England must win at The Oval to square the series 1-1 and so preserve their six-year unbeaten run in home Test campaigns.
