Proteas win Twenty20 opener

New Delhi, Sept 12, 2007: Hosts South Africa won the opening match of the inaugural Twenty20 world championships on Tuesday, when they successfully chased 206 for victory to defeat the West Indies by eight wickets in an exhilarating start to the tournament in Johannesburg.

Herschelle Gibbs' unbeaten 90, enabled South Africa to secured the win with 14 balls remaining. The South African chase was helped by 23 wides by the West Indian bowlers.
