Rajkot: In a nail-biting encounter, India A beat South Africa A by one run in the third one-dayer here on Sunday at the Madhav Rao Scindia Stadium.
Mohammed Kaif led India A won the series 1-0 as earlier two matches were washed away due to wet outfield at Ahmedabad and Vodadara respectively on 26th and 28th of this month.
The two teams fought with all their might in the decider. South Africa A needed two runs in the last ball and had one wicket in their hand. J Botha tried to snatch the single to equal the score but the ball was sharply collected by Inidan A Captain Mohammed Kaif, who uprooted the stumps before Botha could reach the crease at the non-striking end.
India A scored 290 for the loss of 6 wickets in 50 overs and bowled out South Africa for 289 runs.
India A suffered two jolts in the very first over of the innings after electing to bat as both the openers Pravin Kumar and Cheteshwar Pujara were sent to the pavilion by R Kleinveldt. Cheteshwar Pujara scored a duck, while Pravin Kumar made one run.
Parthiv Patel also did not last long and was caught at backward point by J Ontong of C Langeveldt, when the Team score was reading three for 26. He made 15 runs.
India A captain Kaif and Suresh Raina did the damage control and put on 72 runs for the fourth wicket before latter was caught by Langeveldt after scoring 45 runs. Raina five fours while facing 41 balls.
After raina's departure Manoj Tiwary joined the captain but went cheaply after scoring four runs. India A was in a spot of bother with 105 runs for five.
S Badrinath and Mohammed Kaif steadied the ship and added 144 runs for the sixth wicket. The skipper was unlucky to miss the ton by just two runs and was caught at long off by Botha while trying to cross the rope of the bowling of V Philander.
Kaif hammered 98 runs of 123 balls in which he executed nine fours and two mighty sixes, while his co-partner S Badrinath struck unbeaten 88 of 89 balls with the aid of two sixes and six fours.
Amit Mishra made a quickfire unbeaten 22 in just eleven balls in which he hit one six and a four to take India A's score to 290 for six in the 50th over.
South Africa A batsmen tried hard to catch up the India a score through their fifty overs - Opener Al Viro Peterson made a quickfire 56 of 51 balls in which he smashed ten fours and a six, Gulam Bodi hit 54 of 67 balls with the aid of one six and nine boundaries while A Morkel slammed 61 runs in 55 balls before being run out. J Botha, who was the last man out, made 32 runs in 25 balls with the help of three fours and two sixes.
For India A, Tamil Nadu off-spinner S Badrinath was most successful bowler taking four for 43 runs. Medium pacer Pravin Kumar took two wickets for 51 runs.
