Wellington: Batsman Lou Vincent will replace the injured Peter Fulton in the New Zealand squad for the two-Test series against South Africa next month.

Fulton has injured his right knee and will need surgery, New Zealand Cricket (NZC) said Wednesday. Fulton may recover in time for the Chappell-Hadlee one-day international series in Australia in December, NZC said.

The hard-hitting Vincent has been in and out of the Test side since his debut in the 2001-02 season and has an average of 35 from 22 matches.

With Craig Cumming and Michael Papps expected to open the innings, Vincent is likely to battle with Ross Taylor for a spot in the middle order.

Vincent last played Test cricket in August 2005 against Zimbabwe.

The first of the two Tests in South Africa starts on Nov 8.
