Bangalore: Australia kept its cool in the death overs to overcome a spirited batting display from India to romp home by 18 runs and take an unassailable 4-1 lead in the sixth ODI of seven-match ODI series at VCA Stadium in Nagpur on Sunday.
Slow-ball bowlers Hogg (4 for 49) and Symonds restricted India to 299/7.
Chasing a stiff 318-run target India got off to a bright start. Tendulkar (72 off 72) and Ganguly (86 off 111) stitched a 140-run partnership in 26 overs for the opening wicket. But hosts lost the way in the middle overs when out of sorts Dravid and Yuvraj fell cheaply.
However late charge from Uthappa (44 off 28, 5X4s&2X6) and Dhoni (26 off 29) kept India in hunt with a brisk 72-run stand in just under 8 overs before left-arm seamer Johnson sent the duo packing in the eventful 48th over of the innings.
Earlier, riding on the in-form batsman Symonds' 88-ball 107 runs, Australia posted a healthy 317/8 in their stipulated overs. Gilchrist and Ponting chipped in with 51 and 49 respectively.
Australia 317 for 8 in 50 overs (Symonds 107*, Gilchrist 51, Ponting 49, Hopes 39; Zaheer 2 for 62, Kartik 1 for 37) beat India 299 for 7 in 50 overs (Ganguly 86, Tendulkar 72, Uthappa 44, Pathan 29, Dhoni 26; Hogg 4 for 49) by 18 runs.
