Raina shines as India Blue beat Red by 12 runs

Ahmedabad: In a thrilling contest, India Blue defeated India Red by 12 runs in the opener day-night one-day match of Ultra Tech NPK Salve Trophy, being played at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium at Motera, near here, last night.

Chasing a target of 247 runs to win, India Red fell short by 12 runs to end up at 234 runs for eight wickets in stipulated 50 overs.

S K Raina of India Blue was awarded the Player of the Match award for his superlative batting performance of 92 runs, which was studded with 7 hits to the rope and two towering sixes.

India Red"s strong batting performance by middle order batsmen, including its skipper Mohammed Kaif"s second highest contribution of 42 runs, was let down by the meek lower order"s performance.

At one stage, when chasing side had 150 runs for 4 wickets on board in just 36.5 over, it was appearing that the India Red has upper-hand in the match and needed just sensible approach to bring the advantage to home. However, slow scoring rate and loss of three crucial wickets of Kumar (37), Rawat (47) and Trivedi (12) in a quick succession in a span of just seven runs had suddenly left India Red in a crippling position, to end up short of 12 runs to its target.

Like India Blue, India Red"s openers R S Ricky and Gautam Gambhir, too, made early exists with their personal scores of 10 and zero respectively.

Joginder Sharma and A Mishra did the damage by taking three and two wickets each for 30 and 40 runs respectively in their stipulated 10 over"s quota.
