Bangalore: A fine allround batting effort helped India Red post a solid 303/7 against India Green in the second NPK Salve Challengers Trophy tie at the Sardar Patel Stadium, Motera in Ahmedabad on Friday.
Badrinath and Gautam Gambhir notched up a splinded half-centuries and a late charge towards the end by Paresh Patel and Mahesh Rawat helped Reds set Green a formidable total in the must win match.
Badri remained undefeated on well knit 82 off 79 balls while Gambhir made a run-a-ball 73 with seven hits to fence. Kohli, Goel, Paresh Patel chipped in with useful contributions.
Badri, the prolific scorer from Tami Nadu paced up his innings nicely. In his early part of innings he was content in taking singles and doubles and punishing the bad balls for boundaries before opening up in the death overs. His chancless innings was studded with seven boundary hits and one over it. Badri added 85 runs with Delhi and India Colts batsman Virat Kohli (40 off 45) for the fifth wicket stand.
Earlier Reds got off to a shaky start losing Pravin Kumar and Mohd Kaif pretty early with Pankaj Singh plucking both the wickets.
Gambhir and the promising Punjab batsman Karan Goel revived Reds with a crucial 69-run partnership for the third wicket stand before the latter failed to read the top spinner from the part-timer Rohit Sharma and played on to the stumps. Gambhir who is in rich vain of form played a flawless innings. He struck seven boundaries in his 74-ball knock before giving a regulation catch at mid-wicket to Tiwary off Chawla.
Paresh Patel (22 off 12 balls, 2X4s&1X4) and Rawat (13 off 8, 2X4s) played a little cameo knocks in the death overs to boost the Reds.
Right-arm seamer paceman Pankaj Singh and Mumbai off-spinner Abdullah claimed two wickets each.
India Green bowlers found it hard to contain the Red batsmen on the typical subcontinent batting strip. Internationals Munaf and Chawla went for plenty before claiming a wicket apiece.
