Ahmedabad: Hosts Gujarat, after taking a vital 39-run first innings lead against Assam in their four-day Ranji Trophy Plate League Group-A tie being played at the Sardar Patel Gujarat Stadium at Motera, were 85 for the loss of one wicket in their second essay at the draw of stumps on Sunday.
Skipper Parthiv Patel on 48 and Nilesh Modi on 35 were at the crease at the close of the second day's play today.
The duo shared an unbeaten 84-run second-wicket partnership off 35.3 overs.
Gujarat debutant opener Hem Joshipura once again failed and got out cheaply, scoring just one run, in the fourth over of the match when team's total was also one. Hem was caught by Rajdeep Das off Goswami's bowling. In the first innings, Hem had scored 14 runs.
Gujarat coach Ashok Patel, speaking to reporters, expressed confidence his boys will consolidate their position further in the pre-lunch session tomorrow. The idea is to score rapidly in the post-lunch session and set up a target of 350 runs, he said.
Earlier, the Assam overnight pair of S Ramesh and captain S Sharath, who were on 16 and 0 with the total at 56/4, made good recovery by adding another 35 runs. However, when team's total was 91, Sharath was clean bowled by Mohanish Parmar on his personal contribution of 13 runs.
After that, Assam continued to lose wickets at regular intervals and were all out for 189 runs in 72.5 overs, conceding the vital lead of 39 runs. For Assam, major scorers were S Ramesh (43), S Suresh (25) and Arsen Konwar (22) and Krishna Das (20).
For Gujarat, the most successful bowler was T K Patel who took four wickets for 38 in a spell of 11.5 overs. A M Makda sent back three batsmen for 47 runs in 21 overs.

Sharma puts Railways on track: An unbeaten 68 by debutant Karan Sharma and good batting performances by the top order enabled former champion Railways pile up 307 for 7 in their first innings and take a commanding 113 runs lead over Jammu and Kashmir on the second day of the Ranji Trophy Plate League Group-B match being played at Karnail Singh Stadium in Delhi on Sunday, reports UNI from Delhi.
Jammu and Kashmir had made 194 in their first essay.Resuming at their overnight score of 39 for no loss, Railways lost opener Siddharth Joshi(27) with the addition of only eight runs to their total.
However, Amit Pagnis and skipper Sanjay Bangar frustrated the J and K bowlers' effort for another quick breakthrough as they put on 69 runs for the second wicket.
Pagnis was the second batsman to be trapped leg before by S Malik.
He made 49.J and K bowlers then managed to grab three more wickets to reduce Railways to 169 for 5. This included Bangar"s wicket also who contributed a valuable(48).
S Sanyal and Karan Sharma then got together and they tailored the innings with a 6th wicket partnership of 73 runs. Sanyal made 46 before being caught by wicket keeper Sarabjit Singh off S Beigh.
At stumps, Karan Sharma was batting on 68(10x4). Giving him company was Harvinder Singh palying at 11 (2x4).
S Beigh was pick of the J and K bowlers. He bowled well to take four wickets for 83 runs.
