New Dilhi: Indian skipper Anil Kumble grabbed three wickets to leave Pakistan reeling at 142 for eight at tea on day one of the first Test at Kotla Stadium here on Thursday.

The 37-year-old leg spinner, captaining the side in a Test for the first time, took two wickets after lunch as Pakistan colapsed further after being reduced to 74 for three in the morning session.

Misbah-ul Haq was 32 not out at tea with tail-ender Mohammad Sami yet to score and only Danish Kaneria left to come.

The home bowlers kept the batsmen guessing with seam movement and accurate spin bowling after Pakistan skipper Shoaib Malik opted to bat first.

Left-arm seamer Zaheer Khan began the slide by removing opener Salman Butt (1) and Younis Khan (7) before Kumble bowled opener Yasir Hameed for 29.

Pakistan suffered a huge setback in the second over after lunch when Saurav Ganguly trapped the experienced Mohammad Yousuf lbw for 27 off the first ball he faced after the interval.

Seamer Munaf Patel dismissed Malik for a duck when he edged a delivery that kicked off short of good length as Pakistan slumped to 137 for seven.

Wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal provided some resistance by scoring 30 until Kumble bowled him with a straight delivery that kept low.

Off-spinner Harbhajan Singh trapped debutant Sohail Tanvir (4) lbw before Kumble bowled Shoaib Akhtar (2) attempting a big heave.

The second and third Tests in the series will be played in Kolkata and Bangalore.

Brief Score (at tea, D-1):

Pakistan 142/8 (Misbah 32*, Kamran Akmal 30, Yasir Hameed 29, Mohd yousuf 27; Kumble 3 for 26, Zaheer 2 for 31, Ganguly 1 for 17, Harbhajan 1 for 21, Patel 1 for 38) Vs India.
