Bangalore: Karnataka eves advanced to the semi-final by virtue of the first innings lead over Mumbai in the Senior Nationals women"s tournament at the RDT Stadium in Anantapur on Tuesday.
Karuna Jain was the chief architect of this Karnataka victory. After having kept wickets efficiently ( three victims behind the stumps) for 86 overs she batted through the entire innings of 90 overs and remained unbeaten on 70. She faced 254 balls and scored just 4 boundaries.
Karnataka started the day at 6/0 and lost Vanitha in the very first over- caught in the gully by India cap Rajeshwari Goel. Karuna Jain and Sindhu put on a steady 41-run partnership for the second wicket before the latter trying to up the scoring rate was stumped off the off-spinner Goel.
The next batswoman in Deepika Babu in whimper. Skipper Mamata Maben joined Karuna at the crease and the duo pulled their side out of trouble with 117-ball 37-run stand before Mamta was adjudged LBW.
However Mumbai spinners struck thrice in quick succession to leave K'taka reeling on 121/7. Left hander Sneha Prasanna walked in to join Karuna Jain in the middle. Sneha refused to be bogged down by the situation and played some pleasing drives and cuts to ease the pressure. Karuna and Sneha saw Karnataka home in the 87th over.
For Mumbai veteran off spinner Seema Pujare bowled a marathon spell of 35 overs conceding 63 runs and picking 2 wickets while Rajeshwari Goyal bowled 25 overs for 3 wickets. Left arm tweeker Nancy Daruwala bowled 13 overs to end with 2 for 20.
