India elect to bat in second Pakistan Test

India captain Anil Kumble elected to bat after winning the toss against Pakistan in the second Test at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.

India lead 1-0 in the three-Test series following their six-wicket victory in the opening match in New Delhi on Monday.

Younis Khan led Pakistan in the absence of Shoaib Malik, who failed to recover from an ankle injury sustained while playing football after the first match.

Malik was replaced with middle-order batsman Faisal Iqbal.

Pakistan got a big boost when in-form fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, suffering from a chest infection, was declared fit in the morning.

India retained the side that played in the previous Test.

India: Anil Kumble (capt), Wasim Jaffer, Dinesh Karthik, Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly, Venkatsai Laxman, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Harbhajan Singh, Zaheer Khan, Munaf Patel.

Pakistan: Younis Khan (capt), Salman Butt, Yasir Hameed, Mohammad Yousuf, Misbah-ul-Haq, Faisal Iqbal, Kamran Akmal, Sohail Tanvir, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Sami, Danish Kaneria.

Umpires: Billy Doctrove (WIS) and Rudi Koertzen (RSA)

TV umpire: Amish Saheba (IND)

Match referee: Ranjan Madugalle (SRI)
