Panchkula: Chennai Superstars clinched a thrilling six-run victory over Kolkata Tigers in the second match of the inaugural Indian Cricket League Twenty20 event at the Tau Devi Lal Stadium here on Saturday.
Chasing 141-run victory target, Tigers were restricted to 134 for 7 in 20 overs. Tigers were off to a bad start losing both the openers Lance Klusener (0) and Darrel Maddy (8) within a space of three deliveries, courtesy former Pak paceman Shabbir Ahmed. Lanky right-arm seamer first removed Maddy forcing the Englishman edge an away moving delivery to wicketkeeper Chris Read with scorecard reading just eight runs. Two runs later, with his fifth delivery of the third over, Shabbir sent Klusener packing for duck caught at mid-off by Syed Mohammad.
S Das (35, 2x4s) and Craig McMillan (25, 4x4s) studied the innings with a 41-run partnership for the third wicket before McMillan was caught by Chris Law off Harvey (2 for 30). Das also departed at team's total of 85. He was caught by Hemanth Kumar of T Kumaran (2 for 23). Abhishek Jhunjunwala's valliant 24-ball 30 in the death overs proved insufficient as Superstars romped home by six runs.
Chennai seamers Shabbir, Harvey and Tamil Kumaran plucked two wickets apiece while off-spinner accounted for one.
Earlier, a 76-run partnership for the third wicket between Stuart Law (33) and Arnold (38) helped Chennai Superstars score 140 after Kolkata Tigers captain Craig McMillan asked them to bat first after winning the toss in the second match of the Indian Cricket League Twenty20 Tournament being played at the Tau Devi Lal Cricket Stadium here today.
This pair carried the score to 89 for 3 from 13 for 2 before Stuart Law was dismissed by McMillan. Stuart Law faced 38 deliveries and hit two fours and one six.
Two runs later, Arnold also departed as Maddy had him caught by Jhunjhnwala. Arnold faced 32 balls and hit three fours and one six. The next man in ex-India batsman Hemant Badani failed to impress and was dismissed cheaply for three. Late surge by Satish Rajgopalan (23*) and Vasant Sarvanan (22*) stretched Superstars' total to 140.
Medium pacer Eklak Ahmed (2 for 14) and Craig McMillan (2 for 34) were the successful bowlers for Kolkata Tigers.
